Parents are always coming to us with concerns that the goals they have for their child are too big. Be it 11+, SATs or even learning how to ride a bike, no goal is impossible for a child to achieve! 🏆 Here are some simple ways you can make big goals more achievable! 🥅 Let your child identify what the goal is. What do your children like to do? What do they see as their next step? Pushing them to achieve goals that they are not interested in themselves can put stress on them as well as yourself. ✂️Break the goal down into achievable chunks so that they can take small steps day by day. If they want to improve on their reading, let them read a pre-determined and agreed amount of pages or chapters 📖 (instead of giving them the whole book to finish!) 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦Tell them stories about how you achieved certain goals; maybe when you were their age you spent all summer ☀️ learning how to do a backflip and you didn't give up, and that moment was so worth it!! This will motivate them and help them recognise what happens when they try! Encourage the fact that it’s not easy and non-competitive between your experiences and their own. 🎉Celebrate the little wins!!! When a goal is achieved, make a big deal about it. Go spend some quality time with your child - go out to park or see the newest Disney movie! Celebrating a child’s accomplishments can help them feel that they have done something worthwhile. Thinking of getting a tutor for your child but not sure if it’s worth the time, money and effort? To be really honest and frank, it’s not always the best step. ❌ Sometimes, it’s a complete waste. However, I genuinely think that’s only the case with really traditional methods of tuition, where children have concepts drilled into them like robots, which is all superficial knowledge 🤖 and are forced into boring settings that put them off of the idea of learning altogether! 🤢 With that being said, from experience and what I would actually want for my own child, if the boxes below are ticked, I can confidently say it is worth it and can have massive effects on a child’s confidence, progress and even overall sense of self-worth! Short brain breaks have been shown to helps kids focus and become less frustrated. Here are some things to remember: ⏳Make sure that you have clearly set how long the break is going to last for and your child understands that when the break is over, it’s learning time! ✏️ ⏱It needs to be short, snappy and include a lot of movement! 🏃‍♂️ 🕺Make sure it’s centred around what your little one likes! “How could they not know the answer to that question….?”, “We have practised this so many times…?” Or “How could they forget to punctuate their sentences…?” 🤨 These are all valid questions that our parents have come to us with! So, how can you help your child reduce careless mistakes? 🤷🏽‍♀️ 1. Go over/edit work together before it is formally checked. ✅ We like our little ones to think of editing as the final checkpoint before work is marked. In many cases, children are not aware of how to independently look over their work so this is a good opportunity to show them how to do so and make it a routine activity. We have a writing checklist available on our website to help with this systematic step-by-step- routine. 2. If they continue making the same mistake, then it might be a case of them not fully understanding a task or topic. Of course they’ll muddle things up if they’re trying to be a robot and follow steps with no understanding! 🤖 Try to take some time to re-explain these concepts they struggle with. 🧠 3. Praise and reward them when they show good effort as this will encourage pride in their learning and stop only worrying about getting the right answers. Who said learning was boring?😜 This is such a simple and effective way of learning conjunctions! 🙌 All you need to do is: - Make a cube net - Write different conjunctions on each side and go through how to use them. - Start playing! ▶️ Simply start the sentence off and then throw the dice! Whatever conjunction it lands on, your little one finishes the sentence using that conjunction! Each player keeps track of the points they roll. 🥳 Reading Week continues! 📖 A lot of the parents we work with tell us that their children don’t engage with books and just hate reading time! 🤯 As teachers, this is one of the saddest things to hear since we get SO much out of reading, without even realising. What we tend to hear is that reading time is stressful, testing your patience and just not benefitting the child. In fact, they’ve grown to dislike books or throw a tantrum at the idea of giving it a go themselves! Does this sound like reading time with your little one? 😓 Here’s a few things to remember: Reading is such a vital skill that is even known to help skill development in other areas of the curriculum, including maths! 🧮 So, we want to make this a time that children are drawn towards or are waiting desperately for. 💙Once they start to find a love for reading, it’s also an escape place: a break from everything else they may be worried or tired of in their daily routines. It’s important that we adults don’t forget that children also stress and feel anxiety or pressure in the things they do. 🧠 Pressure to read, making it exhausting and boring through choice of books or through losing your patience can just make them associate that negative, stressful feeling with texts and affect their mental health in the worst way. Check out our intense line hunt and colourful creations all during maths! 🖍 A lot of the maths curriculum requires for you to learn the vocab involved and it can be a challenge when there’s so many new words involved! 💬 e.g. Just to describe *lines* in year 3, they’ve got to understand and use the new words: ↕️ vertical ↔️ horizontal 🛤 parallel 🟨 perpendicular and that’s a very small fraction of the geometry vocab! 🤯 So, we like to explicitly teach and then... practise in context! It’s fun, it’s memorable and they get to really challenge their understanding of some terms- try it out! Never stop being curious! 🧐 One thing that I love about teaching is the random questions that children ask at the most odd times. The “Why do dogs eat almost anything?” to the “Did people make Paw Patrol?” to “Are you married?” 🙋🏽‍♂️🙋🏼‍♀️ These questions are usually really entertaining but are also so easy to brush off as unimportant! Especially when you’re learning about something completely different- balance is key. 🔑 Something that I definitely learnt while teaching at school is that every ✨spark of curiosity ✨ leads to new (relevant) learning and you never know what passion that might ignite within the child who’s asked or that has listened in to the conversation! Plus, the ridiculousness of some of these questions are great for a bit of a laugh and stress relief! 😂 What are the weirdest things you’ve been asked by a child?

🧮 Arrays! Look at this little genius using arrays to help him work out missing number problems! 🤩 I love love love using arrays for teaching the relationship between multiplication and division! ✖️➗ What’s important for me is to make sure that children really understand: 🔵 What an array is 🤔 🔴 Which groups can be found within an array and how this relates to ✖️and ➗ e.g. 6 x 5 = 6 groups of 5, which leads me onto... 🗣💬 Vocab to show that they understand what each number in a problem represents!! So important for when they start to tackle word problems and application of their times tables and divisions! ✖️ Times Table Tennis 🎾 Some of you may have seen our previous post about Ninja Maths ⚔️ being a fun way for children to gain some fluency in their times tables. Here is another gem! 💎 🏸 Times table tennis can help with building fluency and confidence in so many other areas, as well as times tables. ➖ e.g. I use this as a starter for teaching children to add and subtract through partitioning! (Adding 10s from numbers like 6 - 6, 16, 26... and back!) ➕ We’re always using methods of teaching that help break up written learning time- these can re-engage your child and get them back on task, while actually acting as a really useful method of learning! 🌈 Let us know if you use this for your little ones! 😊 Have fun and good luck to all of the kiddos going back to school next week! ☁️

Any parents of gamer-children, here? 🎮 We get asked a lot about how to get children to focus on their learning, when all they’re interested in are their games! There are obviously many factors to this but usually, the problem tends to be that the student finds their learning boring and they’d much rather avoid anything to do with the topic. 💡 TOP TIP: don’t be afraid to base your child’s learning around their interests! 🌟 It seems so basic but honestly, makes a huge difference! Whether that means their learning is based around the theme or they have a picture/code breaker, which may be related to their hobbies. Ideas for Roblox fans: 💷 Money- Work in Robux currency. Geometry- Sort the Roblox items into a Carroll Diagram. 🔵🔺🔸 ➗ Division- Themed problems e.g. The area of Bloxburg is 24m squared but has to be shared equally between 5 characters. How much space will each character be able to use? 📔 Diary Entries- Write about your best day in role of a Roblox character. e.g. Which themed room did you visit? How did you feel in that moment?
